ಜೀವಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಬೇಕಾದರೂ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಾಗಲಿ. ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಜೀವಗಳು ಬಲಿಯಾಗುವುದು ಬೇಡ. ಜೀವಗಳಿಗಿರುವ ಕಿಮ್ಮತ್ತು ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿದೆ!
ಆಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋಲು-ಗೆಲುವಿಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ತಲೆಕೆಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಾರದು. ಯತ್ನವ ಮಾಡು, ಮರಳಿ ಯತ್ನವ ಮಾಡು, ನಿನ್ನೊಂದಿಗೇ ನೀನು ಪಂದ್ಯಕಟ್ಟು, ಗುರಿ ಮುಟ್ಟುವವರೆಗೆ ನಿಲ್ಲದಿರು, ಮುಟ್ಟಿದ ಮೇಲೂ ನಿಲ್ಲದಿರು, ನಿನ್ನ ದಾಖಲೆಯನ್ನೇ ನೀನು ಮುರಿಯುತ್ತ ಸಾಗು, ಅಂತೆಲ್ಲ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲೂ ಹಾಗೇ ಇದ್ದರೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಚೆನ್ನ! ನಲಿಯುತ್ತ ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಬೇಕು, ಕಲಿಯುತ್ತ ಬೆಳೆಯಬೇಕು, ಆಸ್ವಾದಿಸುತ್ತ ಓದಬೇಕು, ಹಬ್ಬದೋಪಾದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು, ಕ್ರೀಡಾಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಒತ್ತಡವಿಲ್ಲದ ಶೂನ್ಯದೊಳಗೆ ಸೇರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಆದರೆ ಹತ್ತು, ಹನ್ನೆರಡನೇ ತರಗತಿಗಳು ಬಂತೆಂದರೆ ಉಸಿರುಕಟ್ಟಿ ಪರಿಶ್ರಮಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಮೇರೆ ಮೀರಿದ ಫಲಿತಾಂಶಕ್ಕೆ ಎಲ್ಲೆ ಮೀರಿ ಸಂಭ್ರಮಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಅಂದುಕೊಂಡಂತೆ ಆಗದಿದ್ದರೆ ಬಾಡಿಹೋಗುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಹೊಸ ಸೇರ್ಪಡೆ ಏನೆಂದರೆ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಾ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಏನಾದರೂ ಎಡವಟ್ಟಾದರೆ ಆತ್ಮದ ಹತ್ಯೆಗೂ ಕೈಹಾಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
ಎತ್ತ ಸಾಗುತ್ತಲಿದ್ದೇವೆ!? ಅರ್ಥವೇ ಆಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲೇ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಓದು, ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ, ಫಲಿತಾಂಶಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಉದ್ಯೋಗ, ಜೀವನೋಪಾಯ ನಿರ್ಧಾರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಪಾತ್ರವನ್ನೇ ವಹಿಸುತ್ತವಾದರೂ, ಒಳಗಿನಿಂದಲೇ ಬೆಳೆಯುವ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಅನುಭವದಿಂದ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಸುವ ಪರಿಣತಿಯ ಕಿಮ್ಮತ್ತು ಅದಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ಅನುಭವವೇದ್ಯ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತಗಳು ಏನೇ ಇದ್ದರೂ ನಿರ್ಣಾಯಕವೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುವ ಹತ್ತು-ಹನ್ನೆರಡನೇ ತರಗತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂಕ-ಶ್ರೇಯಾಂಕದ ಪ್ರಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಯೋಮಯರಾಗಿ ಜೀವಗಳಿಗೂ ಕುತ್ತು ತಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವಷ್ಟು ದಿಙ್ಮೂಢರಾಗುವುದಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾ ವೈಫಲ್ಯವನ್ನೇ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಹೊಣೆ ಎಂಬಂತೆ ಗದ್ದಲವೆಬ್ಬಿಸಿ, ಆತ್ಮಸ್ಥೈರ್ಯ ಸವಕಳಿಯ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಕಳಚಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತೇವೆ.
ನಮ್ಮದು 140 ಕೋಟಿ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ಕೋಟಿ ಜನರಿರುವ ದೇಶ. ಪ್ರತಿವರ್ಷದಂತೆ ಮೊನ್ನೆ ಮೇ ತಿಂಗಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ 22 ಲಕ್ಷ ಚಿಲ್ಲರೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳು NEET-UG ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಬರೆದರು. ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾ ವೈಫಲ್ಯದ ಕಾರಣದಿಂದ ಪ್ರಶ್ನೆಪತ್ರಿಕೆ ಸೋರಿಕೆಯಾಗಿ, ಆದ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ರದ್ದಾಯಿತು. ಅದು ಅಕ್ಷಮ್ಯವೇ. ಅದರ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಎರಡು ಮಾತೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಯಂತ್ರ ಪರೀಕ್ಷಾ ಪೇ ಚರ್ಚಾ ನಡೆಸಿದಷ್ಟೇ ಕಳಕಳಿಯಿಂದ ನೀಟಾಘಾತ ಸಾಂತ್ವನ ಸಂದೇಶವನ್ನು ಒಂದಷ್ಟು ನಿರಾಳ ಆಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅನುಮಾನವೇ ಬೇಡ. ಎಷ್ಟಂದರೂ ನಾವು ಮನುಷ್ಯರೇ. ತಪ್ಪುಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಕೊಂಡು, ತಪ್ಪಿತಸ್ಥರಿಗೆ ತ್ರಾಹಿತ್ರಾಹಿ ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷೆಯಾಗಿ, ತ್ರಾಸ ಪಡುತ್ತಿರುವವರನ್ನು ಸಂತೈಸುತ್ತಾ, ತಪ್ಪನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪು ಮಾಡುವುದರಲ್ಲಿದೆ ದೊಡ್ಡತನ. ಅದು ಅರ್ಥವಾಗದಷ್ಟು ದಡ್ಡರಲ್ಲ ನಮ್ಮ ದೊಡ್ಡವರು. ಆದರೂ ಏಕೆ ಹೀಗಾಯಿತೋ!
ಉಸಿರು ಬಿಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದು ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದರು. ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ರದ್ದಾಗಿದ್ದು ನೀರಲ್ಲಿ ಹೋಮ ಮಾಡಿದಂತಾಯಿತು. ಇನ್ನೊಮ್ಮೆ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ ಬರೆಯುವ, ಬರೆಸುವ ಒತ್ತಡದಿಂದ ಆಗುವ ಹಿಂಸೆ ಹೇಳತೀರದು ಅನ್ನುತ್ತ-ಅನ್ನುತ್ತಲೇ ಅತಿ ಆತಂಕಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾದ ಹತ್ತಾರು ಎಳೆ ಜೀವಗಳ ಪ್ರಾಣಪಕ್ಷಿಗಳೂ ಹಾರಿಹೋದವು.
ತರಗತಿಯಿಂದ ತರಗತಿಗೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಏರುತ್ತಿದ್ದಂತೆ ಮಕ್ಕಳಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಪೋಷಕರಲ್ಲೂ ನಲಿ-ಕಲಿ ಓದು, ಹಬ್ಬದಂತಿರುವ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ, ಅನುಭವದಿಂದ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಎಂಬೆಲ್ಲ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು ಆಳದ ಆಳಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇರೂರಿ, ಬಲಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾ ಹೋದಲ್ಲಿ, ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯುವ ಘನಘೋರ ಉಥಲಪುಥಲಗಳ ಮಧ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ NEET ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ, ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥಾ ವೈಫಲ್ಯ, ಮರು ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳು ಜೀವ-ಜೀವನಗಳೆಂಬ ದೊಡ್ಡ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಮುಂದೆ ಚಿಕ್ಕದಾಗಿ ಕಂಡು, ಪ್ರತಿ ವಿಚಾರಕ್ಕೂ ಎಷ್ಟು ಬೇಕೋ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಕಿಮ್ಮತ್ತನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತ, ಅನವಶ್ಯಕವಾದ ಆತ್ಮಘಾತಗಳು ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾಗಬಹುದೇನೋ!
ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ ನಮಗೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸಲು ಹೇಗೆ ಆಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೋ, ಕಳೆಯುವ ಹಕ್ಕೂ ನಮಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಜೀವಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಷ್ಟು ಬೇಕಾದರೂ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಾಗಲಿ. ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಗಾಗಿ ಜೀವಗಳು ಬಲಿಯಾಗುವುದು ಬೇಡ. ಜೀವಗಳಿಗಿರುವ ಕಿಮ್ಮತ್ತು ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿದೆ!

Let life face as many tests as it must—but let young lives never be sacrificed for the sake of an exam. What value does an exam even hold compared to a human life?
We often say that winning and losing shouldn’t bother us in sports: “Keep trying, compete with yourself, don’t stop until you reach your goal—and even after you reach it, keep pushing to break your own records.” How wonderful it would be if education worked the exact same way! We preach these stress-free ideals—going to school with a smile, learning and growing organically, enjoying what we read, treating exams like a celebration, and accepting results with true sportsmanship. But the moment Class 10 or 12 arrives, everything turns into a suffocating grind. We celebrate over-the-top success frantically, and completely crumble if things don’t go as planned. To make matters worse, whenever there is a blunder in the examination system, young people end up resorting to taking their own lives.
Where on earth are we heading? It makes no sense at all. On one hand, we acknowledge that while studies, exams, and marks play a major role in shaping careers and livelihoods, they can never match the true worth of skills that grow from within or expertise gained through real experience. Yet, despite all this practical wisdom, when the supposedly crucial Class 10 and 12 arrive, students get so blinded by the glare of marks and ranks that they lose their bearings entirely—to the point of putting their very lives at risk. Meanwhile, we raise a storm blaming system failures for everything, neatly dodging our own responsibility for letting young minds lose their inner strength and resilience.
Ours is a nation of over 140 crore people. Just like every year, over 22 lakh students took the NEET-UG exam this past May. Owing to a system failure, the question paper was leaked and the exam was cancelled. That is utterly unforgivable—there are no two ways about it. If only the government machinery had extended a soothing word of comfort during this “NEET shock” with the same earnestness it displays during Pariksha Pe Charcha, it would have brought immense relief to these stressed minds. At the end of the day, we are all human, and mistakes do happen. True maturity lies in admitting the blunder, punishing the culprits severely, comforting the distressed, and fixing what went wrong. Our leaders are certainly not too foolish to understand this—and yet, why did things turn out like this?
The children had given the exam with bated breath, only to find all their hard work poured down the drain when it was cancelled. Even as discussions brewed about the unbearable strain of having to take—and make kids take—the exam all over again, extreme anxiety took over, and dozens of tender young lives slipped away.
As children move from grade to grade, if core values like joyful learning, viewing exams as celebrations, and learning through experience take deep root in both parents and children, then amidst all of life’s massive turbulence, things like NEET, system failures, and re-examinations will seem insignificant in front of the grand scheme of life. Perhaps if we only give each issue the weight it truly deserves, these tragic, unnecessary self-inflicted losses could be prevented.
In truth, just as we lack the power to create life, we have no right to take it away either. Let life face as many tests as it must but let young lives never be sacrificed for exams. What value does an examination even hold compared to a human life?
